FIND A MARKIESJE

A Guide to Responsible Acquisition

If you're interested in adding a Markiesje puppy to your family, it's important to ensure that you're obtaining your new companion from a reputable source. Currently, the Nederlandse Markiesjes Vereniging (NMV) oversees the responsible breeding and distribution of Markiesje puppies. Here's how you can find and import a legitimate Markiesje puppy from the Netherlands to North America.

NMV REGISTRATION PROCESS

The Nederlandse Markiesjes Vereniging (NMV) manages a registration list to fairly distribute puppies among interested parties. Registration on this list is based on the date of receipt and requires understanding of a waiting period due to the breed's rarity.

When a litter is born, the breeding advisory committee notifies the registration list manager of available puppies. The manager contacts potential owners in the order of their registration. If interested, the potential owner receives the breeder's contact details to proceed with arrangements. It's important to note that the association does not mediate between potential owners and breeders. The final decision of puppy placement rests with the breeder, and registration does not guarantee acquisition.

INTERNATIONAL AVAILABILITY

Markiesjes are primarily found in the Netherlands, though they have been exported to several other countries. Currently, there are no legitimate breeders of Markiesjes in the United States. Anyone can register on the waitlist for a Markiesje, but international wait times may be longer due to limited export practices. The association (NMV) encourages breeders to consider international placements but respects the breeder's discretion.

Import Regulations

Importing a Markiesje puppy to another country involves adhering to specific regulations, particularly concerning rabies and age restrictions. For Americans, the CDC requires all dogs to be at least 6 months of age at the time of entry to the United States, effective from August 2024 onwards. Prospective owners must verify and comply with their country's import regulations before proceeding. Breeders typically require new owners to travel to the puppy's location for collection, as they do not ship puppies independently.

Age and Travel Considerations

Markiesje puppies usually join their new homes around 8 weeks of age. For international owners in countries with age restrictions, arrangements must be made to meet the necessary age requirement before transporting the puppy.

This addition should provide clarity for American prospective owners regarding the specific CDC regulations for importing dogs into the United States.
